HIGHLAND FLING (Scotch)

This is a vigorous folk dance from Scotland especially adapted for boys.

COSTUME
Boys - coat like a short smoking jacket or plain white shirt, shawl fastened to one shoulder and tied under the arm. The shawl reaches to the bottom of the skirt. The skirt of kilt is the regular plaited kind with a box plaid in front. A golf hose of the same color as the kilt or contrasting is used. A purse hangs in front on a chain tied around the waist. The purse may be made of black silk with a metal top. Wool yarn are attached about a third of the way down. An oversea cap covered with plaid or plain color material with a large feather attached to one side is used as headdress.

MUSIC - is composed of two parts: A and B

COUNT - one, two, to a measure or one, two, three, four to two measures.

FORMATION - this is a solo dance but may be danced by a big group arranged in long open formation or any desired formation.

Note: The change of weight to another foot is done with a spring so it is like a small leap.


PART I (Music A - Touch and Raise in Rear and in Front)

(a) Hop on L and touch R toe sideward right (ct. 1); hop on L and raise R foot in rear of L knee (ct. 2); hop on L and touch R toe sideward right (ct. 3); hop on L and raise R foot in front of L knee (ct. 4). L arm encircle overhead, R hand on waist ... 2 M

(b) Repeat (a), starting with the other foot. Reverse the arm position ... 2 M

(d) Break: Hop on R and quarter turn right, raise L foot in rear of R knee (ct. 1), hop on R and quarter right, swing L foot in front of R knee (ct. 2). Repeat the same (cts. 3, 4). R arm encircle overhead, L hand on waist, (a complete turn is made in 4 cts.) ... 2 M
