The term archipelago is derived from the Greek word pelagos meaning "sea." It has been defined as a sea or part of a sea studded with islands, often synonymous with island groups, or as a large group of islands in an extensive body of water, such as sea.
In other words, it includes both sea and islands which geographically may be considered as an independent whole.
