In the Bible, we come across the word covenant many, many times. One of the most famous objects in the Old Testament was the Ark of the Covenant found in the Temple. What exactly is a covenant? To know, let's understand first what a commitment means. A commitment is one-way promise, a promise that a man makes to himself, or to another, or perhaps even to God.
A covenant, on the other hand, is a two-way commitment or promise between man and God. If we enter into a covenant with God, he enters into the same agreement and commits Himself to us.
When we make a covenant to pray, we make a very strong commitment to commune with God and allow Him to become part of our lives. You are in effect telling the Higher Power, "I wish to be with you throughout my life and learn from you." But because it is a solemn commitment, a pledge that in order for divinity to help us in our lives, we will always be in constant communion with him.
The bottom line is this - learn to make and keep a promise. How do you think God feels when His children do not keep their promises? Spirituality is the spark that gives us a glimmer of the gloriousness of life here - and of the potential of living beyond this life. Kindle that light with prayer and you'll make your home a heaven on earth.
