LOOK INWARD, NOT OUTWARD

Sometimes we miss out on what life has to offer simply because we're looking for things out there that really aren't out there. Many of us tend to look for happiness outside of ourselves. One sad reality of modern life is that we tend to ascribe happiness more to circumstances instead of personal initiative. We allow forces around us to control our feelings and emotions.

For instance, during divorce proceedings, many emotionally weary spouses make the constant complaint that their happiness was taken away by the other half who may have curtailed his or her favorite activities or pastimes. Another example of looking for happiness outside is when we get obsessed with material things and feel frustrated when we don't get them, forgetting that we can still be happy despite that.

It would be wise to heed the message of one inspirational author: "Its not what life does to you that matters, it's what you do to your life that really matters."

You are in control of yourself, remember that. As the famous saying goes: I am the captain of my fate, I am the master of my soul."
