WHAT IF THE PROBLEM IS YOUR BOSS OR A PEER?

When the difficult person in your life is a peer, your boss, or your boss's boss, use all the tools available to you to guide your actions toward the most reasonable and sensible solution. Many employers do have a formal grievances process that allows an employee to express concerns about his manager or a coworker without fear of reprisal.

Most companies' policies encourage the employee and the manager or coworker to work out the differences collaboratively before the process escalates. If this is not possible, the employee is usually required to take his grievance through a defined chain of command. The human resources department often plays mediator in any dispute that cannot be resolved.

In the end, sometimes your own departure is the best course. When it comes to such an extreme measure, make sure you've used sound judgment and not acted purely on emotion.
