This old-fashioned country dance was discovered by Peter Kennedy in Northumberland, England among the village people.
MUSIC - is divided into two parts: A and B
COUNT - one, two to a measure
FORMATION - longways, two pairs forming a set, ladies standing opposite partners, about six feet apart each other. One to any number of sets may take part
PART I (Music A)
Two gentlemen in the set join R hands, ladies do the same.
(a) Advance and retire - All take four steps forward to meet at center (4 cts.), four steps backward
(4 cts.) ... 4 M
(b) Cross over - Advance forward to change places, ladies pass under gent's arms forming an arch (4 cts.). Gentlemen change places, No. 1 passing inside and under own arch. Ladies do the same (4 cts.). Finish facing partner ... 4 M
(c) Repeat (a) ... 4 M
(d) Repeat (b), but this time the gents pass under the ladies arch with No. 2 passing inside and under own arch ... 4 M
PART II (Music B)
(a) Couple 1, join hands in crossed position, R over L. Walk down to end (in front of Couple 2) with four steps (4 cts.), and return to places (4 cts.) ... 4 M
(b) Couple 1, cast off round couple 2. Couple 2 moving up to take couple 1's place
(8 cts.) ... 4 M
(c) Couples 1 and 2, swing around either in ballroom position or crossed-hands hold ... 8 M
Note:
1. Start all steps with the R foot.
2. The steps should be light and springy.
3. The whole dance may be repeated as many times as desired.
